Part of the training and practice of oral and maxillofacial surgery involves the diagnosis of abnormalities of the mouth, jaws and facial region. This includes soft tissue entities such as oral sores and other changes in shape or color of the mouth, as well as bony discrepancies such as cysts or tumors that may be either felt or seen on x-ray.
In general, changes in coloration or shape that persist after a few days should be evaluated by a professional. This includes white or red patches and lumps or areas of thickening. Often the entities prove to be entirely harmless but even such harmless changes may require some type of medication or treatment in order to eliminate them.
If you have experienced such changes or been told by a dental or medical professional that you require evaluation, please contact (AOMS) at (973-376-1144).
